VENTURA, Calif. – The County of Ventura has officially begun the migration of county websites to the new .gov domain: venturacounty.gov. The transition complies with California State Assembly Bill 1637, which was passed in 2024 and requires local municipalities to have a .gov domain name by or before 2029. This transition will provide enhanced cybersecurity and reinforce confidence in the County’s online presence for residents, businesses, and visitors.
“We are pleased to make this move to a .gov domain, which signals to our community that the County of Ventura is committed to cybersecurity and generating public trust,” said Terry Theobald, Chief Information Officer. “Our new domain will provide an easily identifiable and reliable resource for anyone looking to interact with county government online.”
The adoption of the .gov domain, which is exclusively reserved for government entities, provides the public with a clear and secure digital destination for accessing County services and information. The change aligns with state and federal cybersecurity initiatives and best practices and offers enhanced protections against phishing and other cyber threats that target local government websites.
- Enhanced Cybersecurity: The .gov domain is managed by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), part of the Department of Homeland Security. Websites hosted on .gov domains come with built-in protections that make it significantly harder for malicious actors to impersonate government websites. This results in a layer of security that safeguards website visitor’s personal information and ensures the integrity of County services.
- Public Trust: The .gov domain allows government agencies to be easily identifiable by the public and signifies authenticity and authority. Residents can be confident they are accessing legitimate government resources when visiting venturacounty.gov.
The gradual transition of County websites to the new domain has been carefully planned to ensure minimal disruption to the public. Residents visiting the County of Ventura’s current website – ventura.org – will be automatically redirected to venturacounty.gov once the official web address transition is complete.
While existing web addresses for County webpages will continue to function, the public is encouraged to update saved web links and begin to navigate to the new web addresses when looking for information on the County’s websites once the migration is complete. Information about the migration to the new web addresses will be featured across County websites.
In addition to the website migration, residents will begin to see updated venturacounty.gov e-mail addresses in the coming months. The adoption of the new domain name in e-mail communications will make it easier for residents to verify legitimate messages from county officials.
